About Us...

The Millard North Band Program

The Millard North Band program is an award-winning organization that includes the participation of over 250 talented and well-rounded students. The group has a very strong reputation throughout the Midwest region for its excellence in Concert Bands, Marching Band, and Color Guard. The program is highly invested in a culture of inclusion, acceptance, discipline, commitment, and a high level of excellence.

Our students represent a large, dynamic, highly-disciplined, and highly-regarded portion of the school population. The Mustang Band program includes: varsity athletes (including all fall sports), award-winning forensics competitors, National Merit Scholars, IB Diploma students, orchestra members, singers, AP and Honors students, robotics club, construction and welding students, artists, debate, journalism, cheerleaders, and just about any other end of the spectrum you can imagine!

Approximately 30% of the students in band are involved in the academically rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) Program. 93% of the students in Wind Symphony take Advanced Placement (AP), IB, and Honors courses. The average ACT score of the Wind Symphony members is 30.1. The Millard North Band program is the proud recipient of the NSBA Excellence in Academic Achievement Award for seven consecutive years. In 2019, Millard North’s Music Department was recognized by NMEA as Nebraska’s Exemplary Music Program.

Concert Bands

The Millard North Concert Bands are the centerpiece and the foundation of the band program. The Millard North Concert Bands enable students the opportunity to develop their individual skills and to perform as a group based on their skill level.

Wind Symphony is the premier concert band at Millard North High School. The ensemble is made up of sophomores through seniors and meets every day. This ensemble studies and performs the highest caliber music while extending and broadening their fundamental skills of musicianship. Most members will perform solos and small ensembles at contest. All members are encouraged to audition for All-State Honor Band.

Symphonic Band is primarily made up of 10th -12th grade students and meets every day. This ensemble performs high level music for larger groups. Instruction is designed so that students are enabled to build upon individual fundamental skills while connecting with the ensemble.

Concert Band is primarily made up of 9th grade students and meets every day. This ensemble marches as a non-competitive outdoor ensemble during 1st quarter and then transitions to a concert ensemble. They perform appropriate level music for younger large groups. Instruction is designed so that students are introduced to building individual fundamental skills while connecting with the ensemble. Activities are designed to develop elements of musicianship including tone production, technical skills, intonation, sight reading, listening, analyzing music, and studying historically significant styles of literature.

Marching Bands

The Millard North Band program offers two Marching Bands during 1st quarter - Varsity Competition Marching Band and JV/Football Concert Band.

Varsity Competition Band is comprised of mainly 10th -12th grade students combined from both Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band ensembles. This ensemble meets during zero hour before school through 1st period each day. Students are required to attend a summer band camp and evening rehearsals in the fall. This highly competitive, award-winning group performs during home football games and at weekend competitions throughout the midwest in September and October. This outdoor performing ensemble has won the NSBA State Marching Championship in 2016 and the NSBA Class AA State Championship in 2019.

Exhibition Band/Concert Band is comprised primarily of members of the freshmen Concert Band. This outdoor performing ensemble meets during the school day. This group will combine with the Varsity Competition Band to perform during pregame at home football games, local parades, as well as other community performances. The group will also perform their own exhibition show for performance at a home football game. After 1st quarter, this group will transition to Concert Band.
